Penny J. Kjergaard (Sabin)

Penny J. Sabin, 72, of West Bend, WI, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Ivy Manor in West Bend.

She was born on September 2, 1943, in Clinton, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Peter J. Kjergaard, Jr. and the late Norma (Snyder) Kjergaard. Penny attended high school in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated in 1961. In the summer of 1959, Penny met the love of her life, Don Sabin, while he was lifeguarding at the Lincoln Air Force Base pool. Three years later, on June 18, 1962, they were united in marriage in Clay Center, Kansas.

Over the years Don’s career led the family to live in various places including Houston, Texas, and Milwaukee, before moving to West Bend.  They enjoyed years of camping in the Kettle Moraine. Penny worked at B.C. Ziegler and the West Bend Company, and later ran a desktop publishing business from home.

Penny had a lifelong love of sewing, gardening, and baking, which she learned from her grandparents, Amos and Jane Gordon, and shared her passions with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, and researching family genealogy. She was a devoted wife and mother who treasured spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Penny is survived by her three children, Janice Sabin de Medina (Juan Medina) of Darien, WI, Scott Sabin (Peggy) of Slinger, WI, and Lisa Sabin-Wilson (Chris Wilson) of Green Bay, WI, seven grandchildren, Nico, Eric, Dan, Kiley, Derek, Ben, and Melissa, and two great-grandchildren, Juniper and Sophia. In addition, Carroll and Dee Peppersack of Frankfort, Kansas became close friends to Penny and Don as both couples researched family history and visited Sabin homesteads.

Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Don, and her parents.

A memorial service in remembrance of Penny was held on Friday, July 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Myrhum Patten Miller & Kietzer Funeral Home, 350 Main St., Lomira 53048 with Rev. Richard Stoffel officiating.

Memorials to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society were suggested by the family.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Ivy Manor in West Bend for the compassionate care that was given to Penny and to the caregivers of Serenity Hospice for their loving care.
