Cameron, NC —First Sergeant David George Allchin of the Johnsonville community in Harnett County died at home on Friday, March 11, 2022. He was born on November 2, 1941, in Pasadena, California and was the son of the late David L.G. Allchin and June Brown Allchin. David grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961. He had a 23 year career in the US Army as an image interpreter. He served five tours in Vietnam from 1964 to 1971. He also served in Alaska, Korea, and Germany. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, among others. While stationed in Germany in the mid-1970s, David successfully completed the Vierdaagse Nijmegan march in The Netherlands. After retirement from the Army, he worked as a DOD civilian at Fort Bragg and Fort Meade, MD.
David is survived by his daughter Marianne Allchin Coton of Fayetteville, son Philip Allchin of Kirkland, Washington, and granddaughters Olivia and Juliette Coton of Fayetteville. David is also survived by his former wife Barbara MacLean of Fuquay-Varina and a half-sister Nancy Brenning Ward of McCook, Nebraska.
David enjoyed gardening, canoeing, and caring for many dogs over the years. While stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona in 1973-74 he was one of the founding members of B Troop, 4th US Cavalry Regiment (Memorial). In Fayetteville, he was active in the Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts for 20 years. He was proud to have earned the Boy Scout Order of the Arrow as an adult. He had also been a member of the Central Carolina Paddlers. David attended Vaughn Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years and later St. Andrews Methodist Church, both in Fayetteville. He was a volunteer with the Backpack Buddies meal program in Harnett County and was an active member of Johnsonville Ruritan Club.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville. David's remains will be placed in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Several years ago, probably around the time of our 30th or 40th class reunions, I had a conversation with former LHS principal, William Bogart, regarding the whereabouts of some of our classmates. Mr. Bogart was very helpful and remembered this about David. His parent died when he was a senior at LHS and there was no one to care for him. An LHS staff member, actually a counselor, Eldon Heskett, brought David to live with him and his family until David graduated and was able to go out on his own. I was able to speak with Mr. Heskett and learned how to get in touch. David was contacted and we retained his address in our database. I was so pleased to find such a lengthy and complete obituary for David and learned what a successful life he lived. It's very satisfying to share it on our website.
