Cynthia L. Bruce (Cease)

Cindy attended UNL and then worked for Bankers Life of Nebraska in 1962 and later for Educators Security Insurance.  She enjoyed a few years at home with her children and then returned to work as a secretary at UNL.  In 1973 she began working for the Lincoln Airport Authority.  She retired from that position in 1998 and continued to work as a consultant for two additional years.  She thoroughly enjoyed living in the country home she and her husband built in 1973.  Cindy died April 10, 2009 of complications after undergoing hernia surgery.  Cindy is survived by her husband, two daughters and one grandson.

Here's my question. Can we pull off an LHS Class of '61 Reunion without Cindy? We wouldn't be anywhere close to maintaining an incredibly accurate address list without the years of work she devoted to the effort. Cindy attended Capitol School and it's from those days I first knew her 60 years ago. For the last 20 years she came to the Class of '61 casual dinners twice a month. Sharing those times as adults brought this relationship full circle for dozens of us. Fill this void? No. But putting on a hellish reunion will keep that memory vibrant, which our darling Cindy deserves and for all of us who shared in such raucous laughter with our girl, it is a privilege.

Ah Cindy. I really miss her. She was a part of LHS grads who met for dinner monthly. She rarely missed. Nor did she miss Birthday cards . She showed up to sit with my sister at the hospital waiting for a four hour surgery of mine to be done. I didn't know she was going to be there and my sister didn't even know her, but there she was. So thoughtful. Also she was so much fun. Crazy laugh. She loved a good time. One time we were meeting at Misty's downtown. A car load of us gray haired ladies tumbled in the door and Ron Bauers was there at the bar waiting for us. We all gave him a hug. A guy at the bar asked Ron how he rated having so many women ? Cindy's quick reply was "He's our pimp!" Big laugh by everyone within hearing range. No one can replace her.

I've known Cindy since coming to Lincoln from Chicago in the 9th grade. We used to play kick the can in the Washington Street neighborhood, in the evenings hoping that the really handsome family of boys that lived up the street would notice us. I don't think they even knew we were playing because we never got found. We spent time at her house, over nights and playing. as my mom sister and I lived in a one bedroom apartment. She had an infectious laugh and knew no stranger. She suffered in silence and wanted no one there from our class when the end was near. That was too sad as many of us wished we could have said goodbye. She is missed and will be watching our 50th to see if we do it up right.

It doesn't seem possible that Cindy is gone, she was so full of life and love. She was always sweet and kind to everyone, even a shy nerd in high school. She will be missed by many people.
