Phyllis M. Cotton (Pearson)

Phyllis died today, May 11, 2012.  Six years ago, May of 2006, Phyllis found a lump and was soon diagnoised with breast cancer.  She faced it down with grace by continuing to learn and absorb the world, and teach about life and love by staying in the moment and by allowing friends and family everyday to be close. Her obituary (below) appeared in the Omaha World Herald on Sunday, May 13.  To her husband Ron, children Sarah and Tyler and their families, the LHS Class of '61 conveys our sadness and sends deep and sincere condolences.

May 15, 2012, a day to remember my life-long friend, Phyllis May Cotton Pearson. When our hands and feet were tiny we learned to clamp on roller skates, play jax, skip our way to and from Capitol School, play kick-the-can, hide quietly after we delivered our May baskets, ride sleds without stopping for two blocks down F Street, fashion lilacs into tiaras and hollyhocks into dolls, catch lightening bugs in glass jars, deliver the message to the neighborhood women that Tony with his horse drawn wagon had stopped on Capitol Ave. to sell his fresh vegetables. Woke up every summer morning of the world with excitement to run downstairs and out the door to "play outside" along with the rest of the "F Street Gang", Pat, Roberta, Susan, Lonny, Frankie, Junior and David. Pictured here the LHS Cheerleaders 1961, and at our 50th Lincoln High School Class of 1961 Reunion in 2011. You graced the world with your exuberance and success June 11, 1943 - May 11, 2012. Party with the angels, my friend.

Here is my favorite memory of Phyllis:  It was close to the end of our junior year at LHS.  I was heading up the stairs to second floor when I met Phyllis literally rushing down the stairs.  She had this stunned look on her face.  It was clear SOMETHING was going on - was it good?  bad?  I couldn't tell.  She saw me, rushed over, and said excitedly, "Roz, look at this!", handing me a pink call slip with her name on it.  Written in pen on the bottom pen was "Cheerleader".  Phyllis had been selected as a varsity cheerleader!  (This was not surprising given the way she rocked the tryouts!)  I will never forget the look on her face that day.  The memory always makes me smile.

Gone too soon.  R.I.P.
