In Memory

James H. Schroeder

Classmate and good friend, Marvin Itzen, wrote on Jim's "In Memory" page the following information.  It tells a lot about Jim.

MARVIN L. ITZEN

I met Jim at Everett Jr. High and he became one of my best friends. He lived on a farm near Denton so he would come in as far as my place then we would ride to school together.   Jim was one of those guys that flew under the radar most of the time. Pretty quiet and reserved till he was comfortable with the crowd. Then he would open up and show what a great fun loving funny guy he could be.  Unlike some kids Jim had his future planned out long before graduation. I believe he knew from the day his feet hit the ground that he was going to farm. Most kids (me) at that time blew their money as fast as they got it but Jim was tight. We all knew he was really tight.
What most didnt know was he was saving to buy machinery, seed etc. Thats pretty dedicated for a young kid.  We didnt see much of each other after I moved but when we did it was hilarious. He was a great guy and a good friend. Rest in peace my friend.

More information provided by Marv:

Jim was in the Marine Corp Reserve. I believe at that time it was 6 Mos. active duty and the balance of the enlistment reserve duty. I remember Jim chose this route because he could work it around his beloved farming.  Farming was definitely Jim's passion.  Some of the family ground that Jim farmed was partially taken by Conestoga Lake. Those who enjoyed the lake and saw the guy farming near by never knew it was Jim.

Jim's sister urged him to pursue medical help for a persistent cough.  Jim's reply was, "No, they will just tell me I have cancer and I don't want to hear it."  Indeed, in September of 1998 Jim was diagnosed with lung cancer and died May 11, 1999.

Jim is survived by three daughters, one sister, Olivia (LHS Class of '59) and one brother, Bob (LHS Class of '56).  Olivia was also very generous in providing additional details about Jim's life and family.
