Gary L. Edwards

Gary Lee Edwards, 68, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012. He was born April 5, 1943 to William and Minnie (Fenske) Edwards.

Gary grew up in the Belmont neighborhood attending Belmont Elementary, Whittier Junior High School and LHS.  He worked for the City of Lincoln for 38 years starting in the Forestry Department and transferring to Public Works. Gary was a Road Maintenance Supervisor before retiring in 2003. Gary was an avid stock car fan. He also raced, participated as a member of the safety crew and was a flagman for local racetracks. Gary enjoyed trips and vacations with his family.

Gary had surgery 15 years ago to remove a benign brain tumor.  He returned to work for two years and then retired for good in 2003.  The last six years of Gary’s life were spent in a nursing home but son, Tom, was able to transport Gary to stock car races occasionally, which Gary thoroughly enjoyed.  Through these challenging years the family encouraged and helped each other.   Tom appreciated the support of his mother and half-brother, David, to help Gary feel comfortable and content.

Gary is survived by sons Tom (LHS ’95), David (LHS ’88) and wife Robin; four grandchildren; brothers and wives, Donald and Marsha Edwards, Dean and Phyllis Edwards, Glen Edwards; former spouse, Sally Edwards, all of Lincoln.

The LHS Class of 1961 is grateful to Tom for providing these details of Gary’s life.
