Shirley J. Hopkins (Clowser)

Shirley J. Hopkins (Clowser)

Shirley Jean Hopkins Clowser died May 3, 2016, in San Lorenzo, CA.  She suffered from an agressive form of alzheimers.  Our classmate, Barb Dorman Hopkins, has provided this information.

Shirley passed peacefully on May 3rd 2016 with family present. Shirley was born to Harold and Elsie Hopkins in Lincoln Nebraska, and attended the University of Nebraska, married Donald L Clowser and moved to California in 1963.

Shirley graduated from Cal State Hayward with a B.S. degree, and entered into teaching for over 40 years at Del Rey Elementary, and later Bohannan Elementary school in San Lorenzo, California. She taught English, Math and Science and was well regarded as a dedicated teacher, loved and respected by all of her students. I remember  a  comment from a parent  that she was not only the best teacher, but was our treasure. Shirley often donated as a reward to her students, a flight around the Bay Area  collecting air samples on a card smeared with Vasoline. Her students loved Shirley’s special projects like, dissecting frogs, blood typing, and dropping eggs from the roof of the school.

Shirley managed a girls softball team,  participated in Little League, Soccer, and a swim team. Shirley was a Girl Scout, and  Brownie Leader and also loved the Pancake breakfasts and over-nighters.

Shirley is survived by husband Donald L Clowser, brother Harold and wife Barbara Hopkins, and  daughters Susan Varela (and her husband Marcus Varela), Michelle Clowser, son Gregory Clowser (and his wife Fan Yun Kong), and five grandchildren. Eve, Nicholas, and  Tyler Varela. Jeffery, and George Clowser.

There was a memorial service at International Christian Center 562 Lewelling Blvd. San Lorenzo Ca. Saturday May 21st at 1:00 PM.

This is such sad news. Shirley was always so up beat and had a great warm smile - I was always so glad to see her!! We talked so easily and giggled alot!! She was a wonderful person and had such a gentle soul. My heart goes out to her family and many, many friends. She is going to be sorely missed. Rest in peace, dear one! You truly were a treasure!
